Yet the stunning mountain ranges, a wonderful playground for walkers and hikers, remain largely unexplored. The majestic Tien Shan and Pamir Alai ranges, the western continuation of the Himalayan arc, include several peaks rising over 7,000 metres.
At their feet, the upper steppes are punctuated by incredible lakes. Stretching up towards the glaciers are magnificent and fertile valleys where shepherds pitch their yurts. The secular traditions of the nomadic people remain intact and the welcome is exceptional.
